"Elegance" and "Motherhood"

Merrill was called in by Merrick.

According to Herman, Merrill started both songs and Herman completed them. In "Motherhood," the whole opening section is Merrill's, and the counterpoint stuff is by Herman. So it's very easy to understand why Herman may have been happy to not have it in the film.

Herman says that the opening eight bars or so of "Elegance" are Merrill's (up through "Feeling great and look spectacular"), and the rest is by Herman.
