Last week Broadway grosses totaled $25,926,516 for 26 shows, slightly down from the prior week which totaled $26,391,545 for the same 26 shows. Last week, however, The Lion King and Wicked played the usual eight performances rather than nine in the prior week.
Aladdin, a sellout from its first preview and the most successful new show of the 2013-14 Broadway Season, scored its best grosses to date last week at the New Amsterdam Theatre: $1,602,785, a new house record, at an average ticket price of $116.26. Cumulative grosses are approaching $30 million after 21 previews and 165 performances.
Incidentally, Disney’s three Broadway musicals grossed a total of $4,827,257 last week: The Lion King ($2,295,313), Aladdin ($1,602,785) and Newsies ($929,159) which will end its Broadway run August 24 with a $10 million profit.
The not-for-profit Broadway revival of Violet starring Sutton Foster closed its limited engagement at Roundabout’s American Airlines Theatre on Sunday with a final week of grosses ticking up to $416,276, the highest of its run. The musical played 27 previews and 128 performances. Grosses totaled $6,616,618. Seat occupancy averaged about 84% during the run. Many seats were sold at discounted prices to Roundabout subscribers from the stated box office top price of $142.
