Thanks, Alan. But why was Merrill called in? Did ''Motherhood'' and ''Elegance'' replace lesser Herman songs? Why did Herman need help? Did Merrick not trust Herman to come up with better stuff alone? Ditto, for ''Before the Parade Passes By.''

I didn't think playwrights could have their work changed without their approval. Does that not hold true in musicals?
