And just to clarify a bit more for anyone who may be confused: After the American company had played six months, an all-British company was to take over, with Elizabeth Seal as Cassie. Shortly before they were to play their first performance, Bennett decided that Seal was not up to the role and was also just too old for it.

So Bennett wanted to McKechnie to take over the role with the otherwise all-British company. Which she did, but British Equity would allow her to do it for only four weeks.

There was quite an uproar over Seal's dismissal. She did not go quietly.
