Worked on three of her pictures when I was a young lad at Warner Bros as part of the camera crew. "Young Man with a Horn", "Bright Leaf" and "Blood Alley" I became friendly with her following "Bright Leaf".

I remember seeing her as Margo Channing in "Applause" in 1970. After the show my then lover who was friends with Ms. Bacall had a late supper with her at Joe Allens. Later I saw her again in 81 after a performance of "Woman of the Year".

The last time I saw her was with my current mate Eddy. We were at the Barbican Center in 85 seeing "Les Mes" After the show we shared a taxi back to our respective hotels.

When I ushered at the Atlanta Civic Center in the early '70s, I got to see Lauren Bacall in Applause eight times. She was phenomenal! National Tour had several cast members from the original Broadway cast. Loved this production very much! I've got all the memorabilia from this show. (Will the critically acclaimed TV version that aired twice ever be released on DVD? I'm surprised this hasn't happened).

I saw Lauren Bacall in Woman of the Year when it played the Kennedy Center. National Tour had most of the original Broadway cast. Fun show!

Thanks for sharing, Richard. Great memories!

Bogie and Baby, together again.

If you might remember, they even were featured in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

The girl from the Bronx made good.

I think it was panned but I thought The Fan was a good thriller, with Michael Biehn obsessing over Bacall's musical theater actress character. I enjoyed the Broadway backstage scenes, a life that was intriguing but foreign to me.

And I loved that big finale number, "Hearts, Not Diamonds."

Agree. A guilty pleasure. Stylish on its own terms. I always enjoy it. Bacall, Garner (who also recently left us) and Maureen Stapleton. I even enjoy the bizarre "Chicago"-esque musical by Rice/Hamlisch in the film (filmed at the Entermedia, right? Downtown?) And the very 80s Pino Donaggio score, which ties it to DePalma and other period films. Bacall looks great, and Biehn is awfully effective.

I liked this film a lot and thought Bacall was very good in it, as was Michael Biehn in one of the creepiest roles ever. I've often checked the TV grids to see if it's ever on, and there's another film called The Fan that has to do with baseball. Was surprised recently to see that Bacall's movie was on in the middle of the night on one of the movie channels, Flix, I think. Recorded, watched and enjoyed it again. It was more graphic than I'd remembered.

This movie was perfectly cast and it could have been classic if they had remained faithful to the book, which has an utterly devastating ending quite different than the movie.

I'm glad Bacall got to make it, though. She's always been a favorite. It was great to see Lauren Bacall in a leading role back in 1981, even though it was in a wan version of a superior novel. Movies otherwise were already going downhill into franchise-land.

RIP, Ms. Bacall. I'll miss your sultry.

I'm not sure, and there are spoilers to come.

HERE COME SPOILERS, ASSUMING I REMEMBER CORRECTLY.

In the novel, we assume that Breen's "suicide" was real; that is, we, like Sally and everyone else, believe that Breen is dead. Breen succeeds in his plan to murder Sally on opening night and then there's the reveal that he murdered the pickup.

But most of this action takes place "off screen," i.e., it's reported, not shown. If I recall correctly, Breen's death is revealed via a police report and the murder of Sally is recounted in a quoted newspaper story.

This kind if misdirection works fine in a novel and might even possibly be adaptable to a film. The problem is that the climactic event, i.e., Breen's deadly confrontation with Sally would have to be played off stage and then "reported," and that's not a satisfying conclusion to a thriller.

If the plot played out as in the novel (but depicted instead of reported) we would the problem of suddenly seeing Breen alive, and we would need some explanation of how he survived. That would be some very tough exposition to wedge into the climactic scene. Worse, if Breen succeeded in killing Sally, there would be no twist; that is, what we were led to believe was about to happen actually would happen.

The last act of the movie, with Sally's vigilante speech and her killing Breen in self-defense, is terribly weak, but other than having her rescued a the last minute by Hector Elizondo or James Garner, how else could the movie end? In the context of the movie's treatment of the story, killing off Sally would have been both anticlimactic and unsatisfying.

Did they shoot a different ending?

I've always wondered, a la "Fatal Attraction," and then return and change it? I remember those days in NYC so well, and yes, the Lennon death had to be a factor.

I think they had to (or somebody felt they had to) tone down the ending (?), because this was made around the same time John Lennon got shot.

I love Maureen Stapleton in this flick.

Was there anything you could NOT love Maureen Stapleton in? And she had the habit, great actress that she was, of stealing the picture--or the stage--no matter who was playing the lead(Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Geraldine Page, Diane Keaton, etc. etc.)

A fabulous bird
You’re out of your mind
And way out of sight
You’re one of a kind
Unique is the word
And that’s why I find
The others all trite

It's enjoyable, but it's obvious she was not singing live.

I always thought "I Wrote the Book" in that show was the single best Bacall vocal in all of her musical theater work. The Kander and Ebb song sat comfortably on her limited range, and she really sang it, as opposed to shouting parts to music. It's a charming character song and performance, and I wish she had done that on the Tonys. It was lovely in the theater.

I just scanned through the photos they had on Playbill of Ms. Bacall. What a stunning woman. She looked virtually the same age from the time she did CACTUS FLOWER to her final B'way bow in WAITING IN THE WINGS. Gorgeous. RIP.

Wasn't that party because she was an old-looking 41?

In reply to: re: Lauren Bacall has died. - MethodMan 09:15 pm EDT 08/12/14

Your point is taken that she was a good-looking 75 in WAITING FOR THE WINGS, but if you're saying she looked the same in CACTUS FLOWER, isn't that partly because she lost her stunningly gorgeous youthful beauty pretty early in the scheme of things, and already looked like a middle-aged woman at 41 in CACTUS FLOWER? (A beautiful middle-aged woman, sure - but there are other beauties you have still looked like young women at 41.)

I basically agree but remember that the character in CACTUS FLOWER is NOT supposed to be a beauty(even when played by someone as phenomenally beautiful as Ingrid Bergman)or even a young woman.
I saw her in CACTUS FLOWER and was always surprised that, starring in this long-running hit, it didn't seem to do anything for her career.

That's unnecessarily cruel. I cannot believe you just said that. I wouldn't wish death on ANYONE (I see life as a gift) and Ms. Moore's life has been filled up with doing GOOD.

Saw Ms. Bacall in APPLAUSE in London in '73. The show was okay, but she was a star - taking the stage and never letting it go. No voice, but what style. Very glad I got to see her.
