I would also guess because 1980 America's taste for musical theater had evolved into something different and no longer that interested in the old-fashioned nostalgia of Sugar Babies...the Tony awards number did it no favors...comprised of all those old burlesque/vaudeville numbers and skits it was quickly out-classed by 42nd Street, and Barnum, and the other shows opening at the time.

I saw the show in NYC and on tour, and I don't recall the audiences being overly enthusiastic at either, though I liked it. I saw the Jaye P Morgan tour.
