Yes, I have noticed that the British critics often give wildly positive reviews to plays that really don't merit the acclaim. We were equally baffled by the response accorded to the inert and uninspired "Let the Right One In".

It might be a UK/US schism - Brantley (and Lord Lloyd Webber knows I don't always like his taste) noted that the British critics liked "Chimerica" with an abandon that he found surprising based on the play itself.

Of course, as a professional theatre artist, I find that I am often not in agreement with professional critics. I am glad that you had a good time, but from the way that you describe the play, I feel that you are just pointing to the ways in which I don't think it is yet a play at all.

The accents weren't bad - they were quite good. I just felt like I would have rather seen the actors perform in voices that they use more often and perhaps get deeper into the characters. Poor Stanley Townsend in particular seemed lost the night I was there, being reduced to displaying emotion through how ferociously he was able to grip the bed frame.

Meanwhile, if we were to get one production from London over here this year, I would love for it to be "The Pajama Game" - Richard Eyre's production is just amazing.
