They credit what is good and which appeals to them and to British audiences. Both Chimerica and Let the Right One In were excellent as far as I'm concerned. Brantley liked the latter I believe and he is ususally more in tune with sensibilities here (his West End trip reviews are really very perceptive overall). I've seen so many recent American plays which are, to me, overwrought, overwritten and untheatrical (as opposed to the new musicals which are far superior). Having seen excellent revivals of Streetcar, The Crucible and View from the Bridge recently I was wondering what has changed to make the recent crop pale in comparison. I like the sound of Will Eno but have missed anything by him here so far (Quite liked Annie Baker's Circle, Mirror, Transformation but it had a self centredness that rankled). The UK is definitely more European facing than it has been before theatrically. One of my students who recently spent a gap tear in the US was shocked at how (to her) different expectations were (and, of course, she prefers her own tradition).
