Thank you for your very thoughtful response, Alan.

I can not write about "Sticks and Bones," but "Streamers" played at the Newhouse a year or two before "The Deer Hunter" (1978) and "Apocalypse Now" (1979) were released. Also, Michael Herr's "Dispatches," perhaps the best book about the day-to-day horrors of the Vietnam war, was not published until 1977.

So you are right, theater audiences in 1976 were not prepared for a play like "Streamers." I was prepared only because I was draft into the army in 1967.

There are excellent university courses on the literature and films of the Vietnam War, but the courses usually do not include Rabe's plays. Wonder why.
