The revised title song in "Woman of the Year"

Posted by: Delvino 10:17 am EDT 08/13/14

In Bacall's second memoir, much of which seems written on the road, she discusses the changes to "Woman of the Year" when Joe Layton directed the touring edition. She got a new title song from Kander and Ebb (not discussed on COLORED LIGHTS), which apparently is now the one licensed with "Woman of the Year." Is it an amended or adjusted version of the one we all know, or is it truly a brand new song, with a new lyric and melody? And what does it do to the overture? Does the opening, "Sam Craig... wherever you are, blah blah" remain? With a different verse and chorus? Is it a better song? The one on the OBC is infamous for the Bacall reaches on sustained notes (Wo Man! Of the YEEEEEEAAAAAR!) I'm curious if the revision sat more comfortably on her voice, and demanded less of her stylized shouts of the sort used in "But Alive."

It's a brand new refrain altogether.

The verse ("Sam Craig, wherever you are") is the same, with one lyric change at the end:

The ladies are singing my praises,
Soon, they'll be raising the roof.
I'm not going to listen to you, Sam.
Why should I listen to you, Sam?
With this incontrovertible proof.

Also, there's a new song at the end of the show, replacing "We're Gonna Work It Out," called "Open The Window, Sam" - and in the overture, the section that used to be the title song has been changed to s short uptempo version of "Window."

And yes, these changes are in the version available from Sam French, whoever they are...;-)

Thank you. I'll now just say ... the melody is awfully catchy, the upbeat rhythm and syncopation welcome. Bacall seems much more comfortable with this version, where it sits on her limited range, and it's a better start to the show. Nice to know it's available (and indeed required) when staging the show.
