BROADWAY TO DIM ITS LIGHTS
TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13TH
AT 7:45 PM

IN MEMORY OF BELOVED ACTOR
AND COMEDY LEGEND
ROBIN WILLIAMS

New York, NY (August 13, 2014) -- The Broadway community mourns the loss of beloved actor and comedy legend Robin Williams, who passed away on Monday at age 63. The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in his memory tonight, Wednesday, August 13th, at exactly 7:45pm for one minute.

After studying theatre at Julliard, Mr. Williams rose to fame with his role as the alien Mork in the TV series "Mork & Mindy." Williams went on to establish a successful career in both stand-up comedy and feature film acting, winning an Oscar for his supporting role in Good Will Hunting. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times, received two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and five Grammy Awards.

His film career included The World According to Garp; Good Morning, Vietnam; Dead Poets Society; Awakenings; The Fisher King; Good Will Hunting; Popeye; Hook; Aladdin; Mrs. Doubtfire; Jumanji; The Birdcage; Night at the Museum; and Happy Feet.

Mr. Williams starred in a number of theatrical productions, including Mike Nichols's 1988 off-Broadway version of Waiting for Godot, co-starring with Steve Martin; and his own one-man show, Robin Williams: Live on Broadway. In 2011, he made his acting debut on Broadway in the title role of Rajiv Joseph's drama Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.

"Robin Williams was a comedic genius with limitless talent and stunning versatility who left this world far too early. He made an impact on everyone he met or entertained," said Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League. "Whether on screen or live on stage, his multi-faceted talent always created memorable performances. Robin Williams will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans."

Mr. Williams leaves behind his third wife, Susan Schneider, and three children: a son, Zachary Pym, whom he had with his first wife Valeri Velardi, and two children, Zelda Rae and Cody Alan, whom he had with his second wife Marsha Garces.

With all due respect to Mr. Williams, as the announcement itself basically acknowledges, his Broadway career does not merit this tribute. Let him be honored in all the appropriate venues. This dimming of Broadway theater lights should not be applied to everyone, no matter how big a star, or it loses all its meaning.

Not that the dimming for one's passing negates the dimming for another's...but it is disappointing when people who have dedicated their lives to, and made significant contributions to, Broadway are not given the honor simply because they are not as famous or visible.

Among others, thinking particularly of Barry Moss, who cast 80+ Broadway productions and gave many famous actors their big breaks and Rosemary Murphy, who appeared in 16 or so Broadway shows and was nominated for 3 Tony Awards.

I completely agree that Robin Williams was a unique talent and will and should be remembered; however this is not the appropriate tribute...especially on the same day that Lauren Bacall passed. Betty was also a unique talent and she graced the Broadway stage (as well as theaters elsewhere) far more than Williams did. On this particular day, if lights on Broadway were to be dimmed, they should have been for Lauren, who contributed to our enjoyment of both theater and cinema for 70 years.

I'm unaware that dimming the lights has any more meaning that "In honor of this well-known person who has appeared on, wrote for, or produced on Broadway."

Should it only be reserved for the great of the great Broadway stars? Who defines great? Would Streisand merit a dimming?

Of course. Her creation of FUNNY GIRL is much more important than Williams' one role in a B'way. play.
No one said the tribute should be reserved only for "great Broadway stars." It should be given--as it once was--for those people who significantly affected B'way theater.

>those people who significantly affected B'way theater.

Who gets to make that determination?

I'm not saying that Williams fits that description. But surely reasonable people can always disagree about who is worthy of the honor and who isn't. Perhaps it's more charitable to err on the side of inclusion.

"Who gets to make that determination?"

That's really the best question on this thread, because the answer pretty much exposes the silliness of most of the posts: the folks who send the checks to ConEd get to decide when to turn off their lights. Just as you get to decide whether to display Christmas lights in your lawn every December (assuming you have a lawn).

Other stage credits: Wonderful Town, The Visit, Sweet Bird of Youth

In addition to her Broadway credits, Bacall did a tour of Wonderful Town in 1977 that played the Music Fair Circuit as well as proscenium theatres in Miami and Dallas (and perhaps elsewhere, too). Arvin Brown directed, and George Hearn played Bob Baker.

In 1985, she played Alexandra del Lago in Sweet Bird of Youth in London (after a pre-London tour), direced by Harold Pinter. In 1986 she did it at the Ahmanson, with a different cast, directed by Michael Blakemore.

And in 1995, she played Claire Zachanassian in The Visit at Chichester, directed by Terry Hands, with Joss Ackland as Alfred Ill. (Interestingly in light of one of our recent discussions, that is the character's original name and his name in the Patrick Bowles translation. Is it possible that they did not use the Valency adaptation?)

Is it just a coincidence that four of her leading men were also Sondheim leading men? Of course, the show with Hearn preceded his association with Sondheim.

Something that may not show up in her obituaries: she was known for not missing performances. She probably missed a few later in life, but she was a trouper.

Lauren Bacall came up to Boston to do LOVE LETTERS at the Wilbur Theatre for a week with Richard Kiley. It was the first time they had worked together.

Eric Flynn played Bill Sampson opposite Bacall in London immediately after having played Robert in Company for the last few months of its London run (having started as Larry in the production).

According to their website announcing the 1995 season, Chichester used the Valency adaptation of THE VISIT.

I wonder if the critic in whose review I read Alfred Ill used the name even though it was perhaps not used in the production.

You're right, but with the media coverage almost as much as if it were Queen Elizabeth's passing, the theater owners are probably damned if they do, damned it they don't.

I say what's the harm? He influenced a lot of theater-and did early standup work on Broadway stages (even before his 90s show).

I daresay Bacall will receive the same honor-and she wasn't in the theater that much either. (Her career was largely film.)

(I already stated that "the harm" is when the honor becomes meaningless.)
Are you kiddding? While Bacall was certainly foremost a film star, she starred in 5 shows on Broadway, two of them huge hits, and won the Tony award twice for Leading Actress in a Musical.

There is no comparison between her and Williams as far as stage work

There's no harm, but Bacall had a much stronger presence in the theater. She won two Tony Awards for two hit shows plus another of her shows, "Cactus Flower" was also a big hit. I think she was equally famous for her stage work as she was for her films.

Bacall's film work was mostly in the early part or her career. From the 1960's on she was a Broadway star and did star in many Hit shows. Plus she also sold coffee on TV :)

And cat food, and a stock brokerage firm and, in print, fur coats.
