The reason for Mr. Forsythe's sacrifice is no longer a desire to save the residents of Brigadoon from witches. Mr. Lundie refers to the ongoing (in 1746) civil strife between the Highlanders and the Lowlanders. He mentions the Battle of Culloden in which 2000 Scots (mostly young men) have recently been killed and the laws being enacted by the Brits to eradicate Scottish culture -- it is from these actual happenings that the miracle is designed to shield Brigadoon.

There are a number of other touches in this staging which all make it seem like this is a true-to-life story and not just a fantasy or fable. It's a very entertaining production but to me it seemed more like Evening Primrose than Brigadoon.
