That's right, it's a moderate, gradual upward incline for the equivalent of about one city block or less, not a big hill. I don't know exactly where you took a taxi from, but what I think of as the center of Millburn (near the train station) is probably less than three minutes from Paper Mill by taxi, so I'm surprised you could even get a taxi to take you there.

There. I'm less worried about the hill than the space between Paper and Mill (too long of a thread not to get that in the subject line once).

The sign from the train station could be made clearer, as I did not take the correct path walking there and ended up walking in circles for about a half-hour (definitely wasn't on a street with lots of small shops). For many people in Brooklyn and Queens, it can take up to 2.5 hours to get there (allow 60-90 minutes for subway, then time to walk to NJ Transit and wait for train, etc). The trip back can be even worse, if the show gets out 5 minutes after your train leaves, and those trains only leave once an hour.

This is suburban NJ. They should offer a free shuttle ride to the Harrison and/or Newark PATH stop for anyone who needs more frequent & far cheaper transportation back to NYC.

FWIW, it used to be more difficult and took significantly more time to get back to the city from Paper Mill because, after a certain hour on weekends, the New Jersey trains (for some reason) didn't go all the way back to Penn Station, so you had to switch to the PATH at Hoboken. And, of course, you sometimes had to wait for the PATH. Now, at least, the NJT trains go all the way to NYP.

Why should the theatre offer a free, dedicated shuttle to different towns when there's already a train that runs frequently from NYC to Millburn? Because it would be more convenient for you?

The expense of the shuttle itself (buying vehicles, supplying gas, hiring and paying drivers) would almost certainly be prohibitive.

How YOU get to the theatre isn't the theatre's responsibility.

Based on the posts here for many years, it would be more convenient for a lot of people. Obviously, only they can decide if it would be too much of an expense, but I think it's safe to say many more people would go to Paper Mill much more often if it were more convenient to and back (mostly back, apparently). "Should" may have been the wrong word, but there's no need to get all all-caps toward one poster.

As I said, it's a lot easier and quicker to get back than it used to be.

Yes, for people who have further to travel beyond Manhattan to get home, it can get pretty late after an evening performance, especially if it's a longish show and/or if the timing is such that you just miss a train and have to wait for the next one (they're hourly), so I would suggest those people consider the matinees.

On that note, Paper Mill used to do Thursday matinees. Do they still?

I think the theater that REALLY should offer shuttle buses from the closest train station is Goodspeed, because that place is really remote from public transportation.

And a quick check of Can-Can ticket availability on their website shows that there are two performances (1:30 and 7:30) on Thursdays.

And given how Papermill prides itself on getting NY based actors you'd think they'd want to cater to that NY crowd.

You mean the "hourly off-peak trains and a 10-minute walk are too inconvenient" crowd? LOL.

It's no less convenient than the Westport Playhouse, Long Wharf, or most other regional playhouses in the tri-state area.

That's why I don't go to them. I don't own a car, I don't care to pay almost Broadway prices plus the cost of transportation to go.

And I'm starting to rethink going to Can Can. (I do want to see Jason Danieley, plus I would like to see this in process to be an educated theatergoer. However, I have responsibilities here in the city-I can't sit around in the middle of Jersey for an hour waiting for a train.)

Fair enough, though of course, these are the same considerations -- the added cost of transportation, the inconvenience of train timetables, etc. -- that many people planning on coming from the 'burbs to a Broadway show must take into account, too.

That's their choice.

I pay more for rent to get easy access to the arts scene here (and I don't just do Broadway-I see a variety of events).

Maybe I'll just cut my losses on this one.

The fact that the Papermill Playhouse/New Jersey Transit won't make things easier for you in light of all that you suffer is indeed an outrage.

You're obviously free to make your own choice, but in my opinion, anyone who avoids seeing shows as Paper Mill because of the travel time and expense is missing some great opportunities.

P.S. Full-price tickets at Paper Mill range from $107 down to $36, and there are a fair number of seats priced at $76 and under. So even if you factor in travel expenses -- I think a round-trip train ticket from Penn Station is around $18? -- you can still attend and see the show from a decent seat for considerably less than the price of a Broadway show.

Yeah, I think that anyone who is so important that she can't be outside of Manhattan for half of one day (at the most) should probably not risk it.

It's not worth it. It's transferring anyway. I work in Brooklyn on weekends (way out too) so please keep your judgment to yourself. Maybe I have-gasp-responsibilities at HOME?

When you say "it's transferring anyway," are you saying you know for a fact that CAN CAN is definitely transferring to Broadway? I really didn't know this was anything more than a possibility IF everything goes well AND the money can be raised.

Frequently? Once an hour is frequent? Is there a BUS that goes? (I am in Manhattan so I have few train concerns. I'm going on a Sunday afternoon so I don't know what the train schedule is like.)

It's once an hour on weekends (and returning on weeknights), much more frequently if you're headed out to Millburn on a weeknight. Anyway, I don't consider once an hour infrequent for that kind of train on a weekend.

Here's a link to the schedule page.

Link NJ Transit
