Rupert Holmes is on the No. 1 album in the country

Posted by: mikem 11:51 am EDT 08/14/14

Rupert Holmes's "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" is one of the tracks on the current No. 1 album in the country, the soundtrack to "Guardians of the Galaxy."

"Escape" was a No. 1 pop hit when first released in 1979, but I think this is the first time Holmes has been on a No. 1 album as a performer. He wrote two songs that appeared on the "A Star is Born" soundtrack as sung by Barbra Streisand.

Incidentally, Streisand apparently recorded a version of "Moonfall" from Drood that was never released. I would love to hear it someday!

Holmes also worked with Streisand on her Lazy Afternoon album, contributing some songs and producing. Enjoyable listening.

And of course, the title song is from The Golden Apple, to be more on topic.

Thanks so much for providing that link!
I love that song, and I love Streisand, but... her notes are awfully flat here, yes? I certainly understand why it was never released.

mendacity, thank you for the link! I would have to agree that I think Moonfall has a beautiful melody and that I would have thought Streisand's version would be stunning, but it's not as good as I hoped it would be. It seems a little slow and tentative.

I think the whole project got shelved, not just Moonfall. This recording came out of the sessions that Rupert Holmes did with Streisand for a proposed follow-up to The Broadway Album that never happened. The eventual follow-up, Back to Broadway, was released several years later with different collaborators. (And isn't it time for another Broadway album? It's been 20 years since Back to Broadway.)

No problem, y'all. :)

I agree about the quality — ouch! — but in all fairness, it's possible this was just a run-through or an out-take. At least I'd like to think it is. ;) Still, fun to hear.

Cheers!
