I agree with your general point, but I would never use the words stagey or stiff to describe the film of THE KING AND I -- nor the film of OKLAHOMA!, except for the dream ballet, which is phenomenal for what it is but doesn't really work cinematically, in my opinion.

The film of CAROUSEL is very stiff, but I think that problem lies primarily in the direction rather than the adaptation.
