LA: La Mirada Theatre to produce a new version of CARRIE

Posted by: BillEadie 04:17 pm EDT 08/14/14

Here's the press release:

La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, Bruce Robert Harris and Jack W. Batman, and The Transfer Group announced today that an all-new, reimagined, environmental and completely immersive theater production of the legendary musical CARRIE will begin performances at Southern California’s La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts (14900 La Mirada Blvd.) on March 12, 2015, with an official opening night set for March 18, 2015. La Mirada Theatre will be completely transformed into Ewan High School, putting audiences, for the first time ever, at the center of the action in this bold and thrilling twist on the now-classic musical.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Stephen King, this reimagined, immersive production of CARRIE will reunite the original creative team and will include a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (screenwriter of the classic film), music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment), and lyrics by Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose). Brady Schwind directs the production, with choreography by Imara Quinonez.

“The story of CARRIE has endured in the popular consciousness for decades, but no one has ever experienced it from this point of view,” producers Bruce Robert Harris and Jack W. Batman said. “The idea of placing the audience in the center of this world was just too tantalizing to resist. It’s going to be thrilling.”

“Director Brady Schwind is building on CARRIE’s legacy with his own unique vision for our show,” creators Cohen, Gore and Pitchford added. “Making it an environmental experience for the audience is intriguing and daring -- like the story itself. We look forward to this next chapter!”

Taunted by her peers at school and terrorized by her religious zealot mother at home, CARRIE tells the haunting tale of 17-year-old Carrie White. Lonely and tormented, Carrie discovers she has a shocking secret power. But when a prank at her high school prom goes horribly wrong, everyone finds just how powerful a secret can be...

Individual tickets for CARRIE ($40 - $70) go on sale on August 15, 2014 at 11 AM PST and can be purchased at http://www.experiencecarrie.com/ or by calling the box office at (562) 944-9801. The strictly limited engagement will run through Sunday, April 5, 2015.

CARRIE is produced by La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts (Brian Kite, Producing Artistic Director), Bruce Robert Harris and Jack W. Batman, and The Transfer Group; Associate Producers: Joe Everett Michaels, Jane Lynch.

Bill, in San Diego

I don't think I can fit into the the burgundy tux I wore to the senior prom to match with my high school crush's burgundy dress. Cindy is now a grandmother and math teacher in Bakersfield and I'm gay. LOL

I grew up five minutes from La Mirada, and it has come so far in recent years. It didn't have the best reputation at first. Some of their productions were underwhelming. In the past few years, though, it's become one of my favorite theaters in Southern California. Now I recommend shows there knowing my friends will see a quality production. Sorry for rambling, I just get excited when someone other than myself talks about La Mirada on here. Whenever I write a topic on here after seeing one of their shows, I'm usually talking to myself. Great theater!

Well, I'll throw in a bouquet. Their intimate production of "Floyd Collins" earlier this year was exemplary -- musically strong and dramatically compelling, fine lighting and acting across the board.

I happen to find the score and new libretto of "Carrie" atrocious (saw it in NYC), but I'll give La Mirada the benefit of the doubt and hope for a miracle on the strength of "Floyd."

Why would you give La Mirada the benefit - it's the director who will create this "immersive" production - I really do believe he was the director who was going to create the aborted "immersive" production at the Hayworth. Floyd Collins had a different director.

"Why would you give La Mirada the benefit...Floyd Collins had a different director."

True enough; I was mostly responding to AnyaS, who says she feels like she's talking to herself when giving props to La Mirada. I thought it was only fair to let her know that someone else was both listening, and in agreement that management seems to be doing some things right.

But I will say that the putative "Carrie" director, Brady Schwind, did a damn good job with "Parade" at a little theater in Palos Verdes Estates six years ago. A subsequent try at "Our Leading Lady" was much less fortunate, but "Parade" suggested he's not a hack, so that makes me hopeful.

Finally found it since people apparently have very short memories. Yes, this very same, this exact same "immersive production" with this same exact team, was announced last year in March of 2013 for the Hayworth Theater. It never opened.

I can't wait for it to open here - I can basically write the reviews now if you get my meaning. :)

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but why does it bother you so much that it's the same production that got canceled at Hayworth? Why all the glee? What am I missing here?

Glee? I neither watch the show and I don't really see evidence of any glee in this thread. I find it amusing that everyone is acting like a) Carrie is "now-classic" (it isn't) and b) that no one is mentioning that this is the same exact thing that didn't happen last year - why would you hide that information? It's peculiar to me.

Thanks, RobbGrn. I heard great stuff about that production of Parade but didn't realize that Schwind did that too. Good to know. And yes, they're doing a great job.

Um, "the now-classic musical" - really? I must have missed the part when it became a classic - up to now it has had two hugely Unprofitable productions. And wasn't this the exact same release for the aborted production at the Hayworth - wasn't it this same team?
