I've really ever heard the term used in relation to opera productions, a synonym being "regietheatre." And I'm sure there have been some British directors who have done such productions. (I'm tempted to put John Doyle in that category - his Peter Grimes at the Met came dangerously close to what I'd consider regietheatre - but many other directors have perpetrated worse crimes.)
