''Newsies'' big bash at 54 Below: ''Stop the Presses,'' I want to get on

Posted by: WaymanWong 01:39 am EDT 08/15/14

''Newsies'' doesn't close until Aug. 24, but last night its amazingly talented cast held a spectacular sendoff party for its family, friends and fans at 54 Below. It was a lovefest. Jeremy Jordan, with his beard from ''Finding Neverland,'' appeared on a TV screen to introduce the evening. Then, more than 25 cast members crowded the stage to lustily sing ''Hard Times, High Times,'' a Razzie Award-winner for Worst Song from the original 1992 movie (and wisely cut from the stage version).

Andrew Keenan-Bolger and Ryan Steele hosted the festivities of in-jokes. Brendan Stimson, Molly Jobe, Adam Kaplan, Julie Reiber and Michael Fatica did a rewritten version of ''Opening Doors'' (from ''Merrily We Roll Along'') detailing the difficulties of understudying. ... Young Andy Richardson and veteran actor Stuart Zagnit sang a parody version of ''The Oldest Profession'' (from ''The Life''); Zagnit quipped to his teen colleague: ''I've got underwear older than you.''

Another highlight: the cute quintet of child actors who've played Les: Lewis Grosso, Jake Lucas, Luka Padovan and Matthew Schechter. They sweetly crooned Green Day's ''Time of My Life'' (with lyrics penned by their wrangler, Vanessa Brown): ''It's true our Broadway run was shorter than we planned. Our memories are safe, they've been Instagrammed.''

Corey Cott and Ben Fankhauser, longtime pals, made a dynamic duo singing ''What You Own'' (from ''Rent,'' the last Broadway show to play the Nederlander before ''Newsies''), and Jess LeProtto belted Billy Joel's ''N.Y. State of Mind.'' Plus, Julie Foldesi did an original tune with the terrific tap trio of David Guzman, Jacob Guzman and Evan Kasprzak.

''Newsies'' has devotees to the max, and most hilariously, Keenan-Bolger and Steele read excerpts from their online fan fiction: ''A modern-day 'Newsies' is set in San Francisco. Spot works at Starbucks. Race runs a gay bar but is straight.''

Cheering from the audience were Thomas Schumacher, Jack Feldman and Harvey Fierstein. Kudos to director Yvette Kojic, musical director Benjamin Rauhala and producer Shoshana Feinstein. ... As if this ''Newsies'' event weren't extra-special enough, its proceeds will support the Aug. 17 ''Sleep Out'' benefit for Covenant House, which helps homeless youth. Bravo!

'...made a dynamic duo singing ''What You Own'' (from ''Rent,'' the last Broadway show to play the Nederlander before ''Newsies'')...'

FYI: "Guys and Dolls" along with the Neil Simon plays and "Million Dollar Quartet" all played the Nederlander between Rent and Newsies.

BEME, you're right. That's what Fankhauser said last night, but I had forgotten about those 2 shows. (Or I misheard what he said.)

This is why I wish I still lived in NYC. Just a few more years and I'll be back.
Sounds great.

Just wanted to add that at the second, later edition of the rally (11:30 pm last night), the talented and wonderful Garett Hawe joined Andrew Keenan-Bolger and Ryan Steele as a Master of Ceremonies trio. And it being the "late" show, they read some RACY Newsies fan-fiction aloud! Hilarious.....we had a wicked time! Too many highlights to mention, we didn't leave 54 Below until well after 1 am. A truly memorable event for those of us who adore this show!I'll never forget it. Thanks to ALL the cast members, past and present, who made last night so special!

Just a couple other highlights from the "late" edition of the rally:
Mike Faist, who wasn't on the announced cast list, was dryly witty.....Corey Cott, who was supposed to be only at the 7pm show, came back to do the late show because he was having so much fun...and the wacky trio of Garett, Ryan, and Andrew changed into each others' clothes as the m.c'd it all. Sublime!

Steven, thanks for the report about the late-night rally. There is really a rapport and enthusiasm between the ''Newsies'' cast and its fans. (The show's Facebook following numbers over 100,000.) Below: a video about the gifts the actors get.

P.S. In my original post, I wrote ''quintet,'' when I meant ''quartet.'' My math skills are bad, but I can count. ;)

Andrew and Ryan, cute emcees for what sounds like a cute evening of cute guys singin' and dancin'. The tour stops in San Francisco in early 2015. Can't wait!

Where can I find the blog you mention? Can't find it via Google.
