I agree - I don't see how an adaptation of the movie could be anything but syrupy and manipulative, if it's staying close to the source material.

Man, I'm gonna have to see the movie again, because I remember loving it and being especially moved by the acting and the script, especially the relationships between the characters played by Johnny Depp, Freddy Hightower, and Kate Winslet. I really DID NOT find it syrupy and manipulative.

I'm probably sounding harsher than I should - I enjoyed the movie to some degree, I just thought it pushed emotional buttons a little too obviously for my tastes. And I'm sure I like my own fair share of shameless sap :)

I'm with you. One of my favorite Johnny Depp performances....and my favorite film of that year! :-)

I'm stunned by the diabetes remark. I thought it was lovely if admittedly imperfect. I remember when Winslet coughed for the first time in the film while she's hanging clothes and several in our audience sighed a little louder than we should have. That said, I thought Highmore and Depp saved the film from being too sentimental and the last scene on the bench was touching in a very calm, collected way.

Gives you diabetes? Shouldn't that be reserved for real crap like The Notebook or Beaches? I don't think Finding Neverland should be grouped with garbage like that.

I liked "The Notebook" and "Beaches" too. Call me a sentimental slob! :-)

I loved 'BEACHES.' Not so much 'THE NOTEBOOK.'

And I was so disappointed with 'FINDING NEVERLAND.'

But I suspect I'll like the stage version better, from things I've read. Anyway, I'm hopeful.
