You never know. The Baker's Wife's death could be enough to trigger the transformation of the Baker and the rest of the characters. But so cd the Giantess. There were already so many huge, thematic turning points, including the Witch's, that it's likely to me that, in eliminating the mysterious old man, the story and its arc may gain in momentum and power.
