| I saw the Wednesday Matinee of ROCKY The Musical on Broadway. The production closes this Sunday and you MUST see it if you can!!! Alex Timbers' staging ranks with Hal Prince (EVITA) Michael Bennett (DREAMGIRLS) Tommy Tune (NINE) & Bob Fosse (CHICAGO) in the best and most memorable I have ever seen! That said... The score by Flaherty & Ahrens simply stinks. Not a memorable hook (or thought) in the whole bunch. A very disappointing show for the two (RAGTIME, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, MY FAVORITE YEAR etc.) Rocky's first number (his "I wish" song) had the refrain "My nose isn't broken" which is an alienating and strange thought for a repetitive phrase. That said... The show is essentially a love story between Rocky & Adrian. Their scenes and songs were performed with SUCH intimacy and SUCH willingness to allow the subtext to shine through, that I was teary through all of their material. The BIG NUMBERS just don't play. Not at all, at all, at all, at all, at all... Mickey, the Burgess Meredith role, is played by an untalented hack, whose "Big Number" lays an egg bigger than Godzilla could ever hope to lay! But... The Big Fight! They move the audience from Center Orchestra onto the stage, onto bleachers. The Ring slides out to the Center of the Orchestra. 15 Rounds of Full-Contact Stage Combat are fought, each with a theatrical trick or concept! It was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! Never to be seen again, after the show closes on August 17! At the end... when Rocky was calling for Adrian... I was weeping... cheering... sobbing...laughing... and amazingly moved! | |

| I think all the songs that Rocky and Adrian sing are written in the style in which they would talk. So they work for me. The ensemble songs are kind of forgettable, though I did like the Patriotic number. I agree about the staging but the show would not have worked with Andy Karl who was the perfect Rocky. I hope he gets a big part soon that fits him like the Rocky glove. | |

| Dakin Matthews (Mickey) is a hugely distinguished actor -- your dismissal of him shows betrays in a single stroke the value of your remarks | |

| "Mickey, the Burgess Meredith role, is played by an untalented hack" Dakin Matthews is miscast as Mickey, but he's the opposite of an untalented hack. He's a formidable actor, director, writer, and former artistic director. That doesn't mean he's good here. But he's flush with talent and dedication. | |

| Dakin Matthews is a great actor who has given some fantastic performances. As was said, he is the opposite of an untalented hack. He is not a strong singer, though. (I believe that this is the first musical in his distinguished acting career.) However, the bigger problem is that his song is not very good, not staged in a very interesting way, and is unnecessary. The song stops forward momentum and really should have been cut. | |
