Revisiting Once - the movie

Posted by: AnyaS 11:54 pm EDT 08/16/14

Years ago I saw the movie version of Once at a special screening before its release and was left cold by it. I did like Falling Slowly and said it should win the Oscar but wouldn't have any shot against an upcoming Disney release called Enchanted. I was happy to be wrong.
I saw the stage musical last week and loved it. Even thinking about it now gets me all teary, and I'm a hardened cynic. My response took me by surprise.
Tonight I rewatched the movie again and...was left cold again. There was so much I admired about it and I thought it was very good but I didn't care about the characters that much and yes...left cold. The only thing I liked better about the film is the couple's homeliness made it feel more real. They seemed like real people.
I really want to love the film but something stops me and I can't pinpoint why. I guess it's possible to think something is good but not feel emotionally connected to it. Anyone else feel the same? If so, maybe you could help me figure out what feels different between the two versions because I can't pinpoint it myself. They seem so similar.

Also has there ever been any talk of the film's stars reprising their roles on stage? Thanks!
