I don't know how to read this article. Is Mr. Rannells a wealth of Broadway knowledge, and fun to be around to hear his many stories? Or is he a bored cynic who knows he is a celebrity in some circles, and doesn't care to be reminded of it when he is out in public?

I don't know him, so I'm not making a judgement either way. Just can't read into the tone of the article.

For what it's worth, I, too, found it odd. It seemed to suggest Rannells was happy to be there, yet had outgrown the place. It was Seinfeld-esque, in explaining nothing about the performer, merely to dutifully catalog an eventless NYC evening,i.e. "he went to a bar known for show tunes, didn't sing, left." Okay.

I guess it was just a PR plant to subtly advertise his taking over Hedwig.

It's just a puff piece in the Style section. It's mid-August. "move along, nothing to see here".

Yes its a puff piece, but one that doesnt exactely put Mr Rannells in the best light... there is definitely a 'tone' to the piece

You're so right.

Kind of read, to me, with an air of superiority about it. Too cool for school.

Yeah, it really does not fit the classic definition of a puff piece, does it. Well, whatever it is, it is boring and I agree it does come off as a bit dismissive in tone. Like I said, it's August.
