Nice when you come from money. Makes it easier. You can direct Off Broadway shows, go to Yale and still live like an investment banker in a NoHo loft.
I truly mean it. It must be nice.

It's disheartening (but not really that surprising, when you think about it) how many theater people come from families with money. I don't begrudge them their good fortune, but it speaks to how hard it is to make it in this business without boatloads of cash. It must be very nice to spend those early years of struggling to find work with a big cushion of family money to fall back on.

In many respects, it's even worse: when starting out, the main pathway to getting experience/a career is to take unpaid or minimally paid fellowships, residencies, etc. Surviving in this business is a difficult challenge.

One of the reasons the internship issue raises such passions now is that many of us have seen great theater artists who needed to support themselves leave the profession.

Because careers are so often build on doing unpaid (or minimally paid) work, our theater weeds out many of those who cannot do such work.

And we wonder why so little theater appeals to a broad middle and working class audience? Perhaps because those making it largely come from the upper class.

Of his contemporaries, both Sam Gold and Alex Timbers also come from very privileged families who have given them the financial resources to continue working Off-Broadway and in smaller theaters without having to worry about money.

His Uncle is Lewis Cullman, the very generous billionaire...NY performing Library, MOMA wing, Museum of Natural History Wing, etc...Of course none of us choose our relatives, but it's good to be THE KING, ( thanks, Mel Brooks)

Trip has done some good work directing. And his name is so preppy. He may not be like that at all, though, who knows?
