Could it just be the difference between film and live theater? It can be easier to feel more engaged, more invested in a live performance that may seem distant and not as good on film. Watching a film on TV puts you several layers away from the type of personal "happening right now" interaction you have in a live theater experience.

I know this is a simple potential answer to your question, but maybe you experience art differently live than taped or filmed?

I wondered that too. Once kind of reminds me of the Before film series, though, and those films always hit me in the gut.

Can't help you there. I was very moved by the film. Hansard and Iglova act so natural in the movie and it's obvious they love music and their chemistry comes from their friendship together.

Glad the show moved you Anna S. I was surprised how well the stage show expanded upon the movie. I've seen the show in three different venues, with different Guys and Girls and it works for me every time. I've been tempted to see the current cast through TDF but I don't want memory of Kazee and Miloti to fade too much. Wish the first stage incarnation had been filmed as a video for purchase.

For those who think all the music sounds the same, I listen to contemporary music all the time and I guess you like this kind of music or you don't. (And I love classical music, too). I've always liked Hansard, his work with the Frames, and his current output. Some of it has to do with my love for Irish folk music.

SPOILER:
There's a sequel/documentary to the movie ONCE, which played briefly at the Quad in NYC. It follows the consequences of fame and money once the two have won the Oscar, and, as I remember, the story of it takes place after they've physically consummated their love relationship (which they had refrained from doing during ONCE because of her marriage) and also "broken up." It's as if the two movies bookend the love affair itself, and they are both testament to the love of music and collaboration they share. Art reflecting the effect art had on their lives. Strangely powerful connection those two had.

lordospeech -- I saw the black and white documentary which I liked a lot. It follows the two musicians when they performed as the Swell Season. These were magical concerts and the recording are wonderful.

It must be interesting to have your relationship reflected in two different kinds of films. I saw the film at the Cinema Village.

Doubt if either Hansard or Irglova will do the show. I don't think either of them ever wanted have an acting career. I know Hansard wound up being in the film because the original actor cast for the part turned out not right for the part.
