Could it just be the difference between film and live theater? It can be easier to feel more engaged, more invested in a live performance that may seem distant and not as good on film. Watching a film on TV puts you several layers away from the type of personal "happening right now" interaction you have in a live theater experience. I know this is a simple potential answer to your question, but maybe you experience art differently live than taped or filmed?
