It is possible that what you are responding to in the play that is not in the musical is the choreography and the stage movement. I think the movement onstage is geared to the subconscious/unconscious feelings in the audience, drawing on those feelings to bring the audience into the story. From the work of his that I have seen, Steven Hoggett is a genius.
