buyer and cellar--must see

Posted by: dramedy 01:13 am EDT 08/20/14

I saw it in ny earlier this year. I saw it tonight again. Michael urie is still fantastic in this. Such a rare treat to have the star in sf. Its on goldstar. The balcony was closed, so i dont know if they will open up if selling out. Tonight was pretty full.

Balcony was open tonight. It was full house and Michael got a standing ovation after his 100 minutes on stage. Regional review will come up.

You're probably right. I would just judge that it was 90% men and 10% women last night. The audience screamed on his "imitation" of Ms Streisand

I'm surprised at that mix

I would say it was half women on Tuesday. A co-worker couldn't go with me, so I might see it again next week with her. It was as funny the second time around, which is rare for comedies. But part of that is the imitation is pretty funny.

I agree he is outstanding. A wildly charismatic performer that brilliantly pull that large theatre into what was originally an intimate staging.

The play is pure fluff, but few seemed to mind.

why would anyone mind that its fluff

A comedy that is actually laugh out loud funny is rare. Not every show has to have a deep meaning

Actually, I kind of minded. Not the fluffiness per se, but that the script wasn't that good. I thought the performance was great and I did, in fact, laugh out loud at times. But I also got bored with it before it ended. A better script would have kept me engaged in the show, rather than just appreciating the quality of the performance.

(Also, as I've been to the DuPont place in Delaware, I was irked every time he used the German pronunciation of Winterthur (which is fine for the City in Switzerland for which it is named) rather than the American one by which it is actually known. He got a laugh every time he used the German one -- because it sounded super-pretentious -- but it was, y'know, wrong.)

Exactly how I feel.

A terrific performance, but a forgettable play.
