In reply to: maybe we will finally see the end of sf "first or not at all." - dramedy 07:53 pm EDT 08/25/14

I can't help but see this as a win for SF audiences.

Her "first or not at all" policy made lots of shows that would have done well in SF not play it at all.

Hopefully that policy changes. And hopefully they'll now come to better deals with producers on par with other presenters in the region and around the country and not the restrictive financial deals that have made SF less attractive to producers than markets like Sacramento and San Jose.

Hopefully this will lead to MORE shows WANTING to go into SF.

TourBoi…I think that is a key point, Ms. Shorenstein-Hays needs to get over her “first or never” mindset. While San Jose and San Francisco are close geographically – only 40 miles or so apart – the rise of Silicon Valley is making SJ and SF into two distinct regions. Bottom line, if the market is there – if there are “butts to fill the seats” as they say – what difference does it make? And I believe there are enough people in both regions to fill the seats. Though I’m sure SHN-SF has done marketing and research and may have facts to prove me wrong.

They're also notoriously difficult to work with - with or without Ms. Shorenstein Hayes.

Wouldn't it be like other tour cities?

I hope they get rid of the $10 fee per ticket for using a credit card at the boxoffice. I think only cash avoids that fee. I haven't bought a ticket at the boxoffice in years because they are usually closed unless a show is in town.

It's quite different from other tour cities.

In most cities, presenters pay a guarantee to the producers. If they sell enough tickets to "profit" above the guarantee and running costs (local crew, advertising, etc) that profit is split between presenter and producers.

In SF much of the time these days, SHN refuses to pay a full guarantee, often paying as little as half, and doing a "shared risk" scenario.

Now, if the show is a big smash hit, both parties make more money. But if it does "okay," producers could lose money.

So when Sac and San Jose can approach and do a standard deal, they're far more attractive.

It's worth mentioning that Nederlander's run San Jose (and a number of other markets which do, I believe, operate on a standard presenting deal). So with her out of the picture, perhaps SF will return to the traditional model and more shows will find SF appealing.
