Ion Theatre, the only San Diego company to have twice won the Critics Circle's Braunagel Award for outstanding work by a small theatre, has announced a new season that the company is calling "Out of the Box." The season features four workshops of new plays, all of them either written by the company founders or developed in collaboration with company members. Following the season of workshops, one of the plays will be selected to make its world premiere next June at an Off-Broadway theatre in New York.
The four plays are titled:
GROVE, written by co-founder Glenn Paris
6, written by co-founder Claudio Raygoza
RYES, also written by Raygoza
SEA OF SOULS, a play with music conceived by Paris and Raygoza, with original music by company member Linda Libby, to be developed by the company
In addition, the company is promising two site-specific works, REFUSE, OR THE GOLDEN DOOR, which will be developed by the founders and the company, along with members of San Diego's refugee community (April 2015), and the San Diego Premiere of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, in September 2015, with both locations to be announced. The company hosted the San Diego premiere of PASSION this past spring.
The world premiere of one of the four workshops will be held in New York in June 2015 and run for four weeks. The production will return to San Diego and open here in August.
The company is also producing an "extra," Chloë Moss' THIS WIDE NIGHT, which will open September 13 and run into October.
Ion has been teasing its season for a while but only just posted the actual announcement. It has been keeping its theatre space active since the close of the last season by hosting a rental and lately by inviting subscribers to staged readings.
