Craig Jessup Sings The Glory of Love Celebrating the Gershwins, Sondheim, Rodgers & Hart, Arlen and more Ken Muir, piano Friday, September 19 8 p.m. 142 Throckmorton Theatre 142 Throckmorton Ave., Mill Valley
You’ve got to win a little, lose a little, yes, and always have the blues a little. That’s the story of, that’s the glory of love…

Acclaimed Bay Area crooner Craig Jessup returns to the concert stage with another collection of classics from the Great American Songbook.

For one night only, Jessup sings the best of George and Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Stephen Sondheim, Harold Arlen and more. Craig Jessup Sings The Glory of Love explores every phase of a relationship through the words and music of some of the 20th century’s most brilliant composers.

From “How Long Has This Been Going On” to “Where or When,” “Right as the Rain” and “Good Thing Going,” Jessup, musical director Ken Muir and director Marv Werlin explore the highs and lows, the agony and the glory of love. The evening may even include a Jessup original.

Craig Jessup has been playing theatres, cabarets and concert halls throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe for more than 25 years. Jessup teamed with Ruth Hastings and Barry Lloyd in 1977 to form Ruth Hastings & Co. The trio played nearly every cabaret in San Francisco including Le Domino, Chez Jacques, Gordon’s, Fanny’s, Trinity Place and the Plush Room, culminating in a sold-out concert at the Geary Theatre which was recorded live.

A highly successful run of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris at Chez Jacques resulted in an invitation to perform the acclaimed musical revue in Brussels, Belgium at the Belgian National Opera Company just after Brel’s death.

On his own, Mr. Jessup appeared in many musical revues and with Artstreet Theatre, Rohnert Park’s Pacific Alliance Theatre Company, Broadway by the Bay (San Mateo), California Conservatory Theatre, 42nd Street Moon, the Aurora Theatre Company and Marin’s Alter Theater Ensemble.

Ken Muir is a San Francisco based pianist/arranger/composer/lyricist who has worked in the Bay Area for more than 25 years, also performing regularly in New York and occasionally in Europe. He played and arranged for each of vocalist Paula West's three CDs and has accompanied many of other fine singers, both on recordings and at the Plush Room. Ken is currently preparing for a recording and revue of his own music and lyrics.

OSF PRESENTS LISA WOLPE’S SHAKESPEARE AND THE ALCHEMY OF GENDER Shakespearean drag king Lisa Wolpe will perform her solo show Sept. 1, 2014

.—The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) will welcome Lisa Wolpe, LA Women’s Shakespeare Company artistic director and acclaimed Shakespearean drag king, to the Angus Bowmer Theatre on September 1 at 8 p.m. for OSF Presents: Shakespeare and the Alchemy of Gender.

Wolpe, who appeared at OSF in 2012 as Polina in The Seagull and as Jason, Chorus and Ensemble in Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella, returns to the Festival with this solo show that shares the story of a masterful performer rending the veil that separates genders, actors and audience, and the present from the past. Wolpe reveals physical and spiritual secrets of cross-gender performance and offers insight into the making of the Bard’s magic.

“Lisa Wolpe is an amazing interpreter of Shakespeare,” said Claudia Alick, OSF’s Associate Producer, Community. “She approaches characters such as Iago and Hamlet in challenging and illuminating ways. It’s a pleasure to have this company member returning to share some master work.”

General seating tickets for this show are $18 for members and $20 for non-members and may be purchased in advance online, in person at the OSF Box Office, or by calling 800-219-8161. Due to the Labor Day holiday, web sales will close Sunday, August 31, and tickets will be available for purchase and pick-up at the Angus Bowmer Theatre door on Monday, September 1.

In its third year, OSF Presents is a program designed to give Oregon Shakespeare Festival artists an arena to share their art with the public on a larger scale than they may be able to do independently. The artists are a mix of company members and Green Show guest artists and playwrights. Proceeds from the shows are shared by the artists and OSF. This program is funded in part by the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation. The final OSF Presents of the 2014 season will be Luis Alfaro's St. Jude on September 11 during CultureFest.

OSF RECEIVES $125,000 GRANT TO SUPPORT SECRET LOVE IN PEACH BLOSSOM LAND

Oregon Community Foundation joins ranks of donors supporting 2015 production by Taiwanese playwright Stan Lai

.—The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) has received a $125,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) to support the 2015 U.S. premiere of Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, a hugely popular play in China and Taiwanby Taiwanese playwright Stan Lai, who also translated the play to English and will direct at OSF.

The grant is part of OCF’s Creative Heights initiative, a $4 million, five-year investment by OCF that addresses the need for Oregon’s arts and culture organizations to test new ideas, stretch their creative capacity, and provide unique opportunities for Oregonians to experience innovative arts and culture.

“Through the Creative Heights initiative, OCF is able to help arts and culture nonprofits innovate,” said Max Williams, OCF President and CEO. “We’re excited that audiences in Jackson County and throughout Oregon will have opportunities to experience the creative power of artists in our state.”

Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land is garnering high levels of support and enthusiasm among donors and sponsors. Among them are the show’s Producing Sponsors, Judy Shih and Joel Axelrod, who have played a key role in bringing Lai and Secret Love to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and whose financial support of the play represents the largest gift OSF has ever received for a single production.

Lai has been hailed as “probably the best Chinese language playwright and director in the world” by the BBC, and his Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land has become one of the most popular plays in modern China since its debut in 1986. A pair of plays—one a bawdy retelling of a classic Chinese fable, the other a poignant story of a couple separated in the wake of China’s 1949 revolution—collide onstage when two acting troupes accidentally book the same theatre for rehearsals. Amid the chaos, squabbles and comical jabs at theatre life, the two plays begin to mysteriously intertwine, their epic themes calling to each other across the centuries in a blend of modern realism and Peking opera.

“For a theatre with Shakespeare at its very core, presenting great texts from around the globe represents a logical and profound extension of our mission,” said OSF Artistic Director Bill Rauch. “I am particularly excited by Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land because it is the first world classic OSF has programmed where both playwright and director (the same artist in this case) originate from the same country as the story. The resulting authenticity of the production and deep connection to the originating culture will both challenge and enrich our efforts—and bring OSF’s commitment to global classics to an entirely new level.”
