Interesting topic. Why don't you write to Mathis and ask him about this? I'd be very interested to hear what he has to say about it. I know when I was a young auditioning performer I avoided hetero-centric lyrics, choosing gender neutral songs -- "You Are My Lucky Star" was my up-tempo. Singing female pronouns with conviction just seemed like extra work, but I hadn't had much acting training at the time. Since I always found the audition process psychologically grueling I just reasoned that the less work I made for myself the better. Mind you, I was a very young dancer not an actor, and rarely tried out for straight (in both senses of the word) acting parts. If I were still pursuing a performing career I think I'd do things differently and just say the hell with it, I'll sing what the lyricist wrote. I wonder how young auditioning performers today are dealing with this issue.
