Ok, I forgot about "Maria" and "What Will My Mary Say" among others. I still think they were relative rarities in his output.

Also, I think the point Alcindoro brought up about some folks being uncomfortable with opposite sex pronouns is sometimes valid.

Mathis wasn't "out" for many years. He also had the back story of being a track and field athlete; around the time of his first recording his had to make a choice of either going to the Olympics on the team or making a recording. We know how that turned out.

There's also a wonderful number he did with Andy Williams where they do all sorts of athletic things while they are singing. Lots of fun.
