Off-Broadway Assassins Questions

I was reading the Wikipedia article on Assassins this morning and was surprised to see this quote from the LA Times about the Off Broadway production: "The show has been sold out since previews began, reflecting the strong appeal of Sondheim's work among the theater crowd." The next line then mentions Frank Rich's negative review. A linked article also features a list of other critics who also gave it thumbs down. I was always under the assumption that the off-Broadway production tanked with critics and at the box office. So did the show actually continue to sell well throughout its Off Broadway run? Or did ticket sales decline sharply after the reviews came out? Was there any talk of transferring the show to Broadway before the reviews came out? And if the strong box office continued even after the negative reviews, would it have been unheard of for a show to transfer to Broadway despite negative reviews? Incidentally, I had no idea that all these years I've been listening to Greg Germann on the cast recording. I can't believe I never made the connection. Thanks in advance.
