I tend to remember that the show was sold out to subscribers in the small Playwrights Horizons space before the planned limited run even started. I was hoping to get to NYC to see it (it would have been the first original run of a Sondheim show I would have seen live in the theatre - but I finally did that with Passion), but tickets were just not to be had. So I don't think there was a question of ticket sales 'continuing' at all.

I don' t know when the talk of a transfer started, but I do remember they did have hopes to do it - but then the Gulf War happened, and it seemed like the wrong time to bring such a piece to Broadway. (And it's chillingly ironic that 9/11 was a similar culprit the next time around.)
