I saw the show during the first week of previews, sitting in the next-to-last row directly in front of Stephen Sondheim, who was taking notes. My memory is that the show was sold out for the entire limited run even before previews began. Playwrights Horizons had a healthy subscriber base, and whatever they didn't take went immediately to the general public. An ongoing commercial run in that small space would not have been feasible. I think everyone hoped the show would go to Broadway, as "Sunday in the Park With George" had done, but there was no formal announcement of plans to move it. Once the mixed reviews came out, and especially Frank Rich's verdict, transfer of such a daring show was, I think, pretty much vetoed. However, Off-Broadway ticket sales didn't decline after the reviews, because there were no tickets left to sell.
