And it's worth remembering that the old Playwrights Horizons space was tiny. Tiny. It did not take much to sell the place out, especially when you consider that PH is a subscription-based company. It could very well be that there were literally no tickets to be had.

When they made the decision to tear down their longtime home and build something new, I suspect that that decision was made because they could no longer grow their audience because, unless a show had absolutely awful word of mouth, there were no tickets for new people to buy.

They had to know at the time that a new Sondheim musical would be a complete sell-out. I always wondered why they didn't produce it in another off-Broadway theatre (the Lortel, the Variety Arts, whatever) where they could have sold many more tickets. I wonder if they just assumed that the show would be transfering to Broadway (as SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE had) and that they'd get a piece of the action from the Broadway production.
