Yes, I wasn't clear in my post about what I was thinking. I was speculating about why PH didn't produce the show out-of-house in a commercial off-Broadway theatre, just as you clarified. I didn't mean that the writers should have taken the show elsewhere.

Manhattan Theatre Club used to do this at least once a season before they acquired the Biltmore.

The more I think about it, the more I think that it was probably just assumed that the show would transfer, so why bother spending the extra money to produce it in a larger venue? Whatever PH would have earned through having had more tickets to sell, would probably have been more than made up by their earnings from the Broadway production (that never happened).
