That's what I get for not checking and relying on memory.

So far as the sexual orientation question goes, I never think of the singer as expressing these emotions strictly personally. That is, when Eydie Gorme sang "IF He Walked Into My Life," I never imagined she was singing it about Steve Lawrence, or for that matter about either of her sons: rather, Eydie was playing a character singing about a man who walked out on her or in whatever other way was no longer around.

The identification obviously can be rather close, e.g., Sinatra singing "One for My Baby," which coordinates closely with his persona of the troubled party guy. But I don't think anyone ever believed it was actually Sinatra singing about a one-night stand or even Ava Gardner.

So why shouldn't a gay man sing "This Nearly Was Mine," or, for that matter, why shouldn't a woman, gay or straight, sing,"I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" in a cabaret setting?
