So far as the sexual orientation question goes, I never think of the singer as expressing these emotions strictly personally. That is, when Eydie Gorme sang "IF He Walked Into My Life," I never imagined she was singing it about Steve Lawrence, or for that matter about either of her sons: rather, Eydie was playing a character singing about a man who walked out on her or in whatever other way was no longer around.

Right. And of course as originally written, it's a song sung by an aunt about her nephew - not a song of romantic love at all. (And same of course with "My Best Girl/Beau".)
