why wouldn't he just use "she" then?

Lots of closeted singers, or people writing/singing songs to the majority, use the pronoun of the opposite sex. Wouldn't a man avoiding singing a song that identifies his love as a woman be more suspect than one who lies and says "I love HER"?

I think it probably had more to do with universality for sales.

And with Gyspy, did you want him to sing "I'm a woman with children?" I don't understand the question on that one.
