"I've never heard the 'pretty' lyric, but I have heard 'Although I may not be the man some girls think of as handsome...' And I've heard plenty of singers, m & f, who don't phrase it properly so the rhyme doesn't come off."

Yes, I've heard that version, as well. It's obviously a much better option when a man sings the song. And yes, I've heard some singers of both sexes phrase it badly.
