Sure they are.

The Yankees honored Jeter yesterday after a fanfare of press releases. They did not have to, and many others will not be afforded that honor when they retire. It is a private decision.

The dimming is the same, and it is meaningless if it is done in reaction to petitions or other nonsense. It is a sentiment of the theatre owners and producers, not the fan girls who vote on Broadway.com. The effect of democratizing a gesture is to render it meaningless.

If you want to dim a light for joan, or light a candle, or whatever, do it. That's your gesture.
