I would dim them for every Tony nominee, famous or not. But I'm not on the committee.

I think if you've made a contribution notable enough to be nominated, and certainly to win, a Tony Award, then you've made a contribution and should be honored.

But does that imply anyone not nominated never made a notable contribution? No. And is it likely they'd dim the lights for a lighting designer who was nominated once in the 80s? I doubt it.

I don't know... this is a touchy subject. But their way of deciding seems arbitrary. Joan was in 3 shows and nominated for a leading actress Tony, and was an avid fan. Robin Williams was in 1 show and wasn't nominated (great as he supposedly was in the show). I don't think doing stand up on Broadway really counts either (Lewis Black shouldn't have the lights dimmed for him, for example).

I don't know.
