Joan's desire for a big flashy funeral service, and Melissa's request that we all keep laughing because that's what Mom would want, make it seem odd to me that the lights should be dimmed. If anything they should blaze brighter in her memory. So I'm fine with them not being dimmed.

Yeah, I get the whole recognition idea. But the dimming seems to have become diluted. It happens several times a year now. The specialness is gone.

I know I'm in the minority here -- though I didn't read all the posts in this thread -- but I say stop the process altogether. The debate and arguing not just over Joan but over every future honoree or "snubee" turns what should be a celebration of a life into an "us and them" battle of vitriol and viciousness.

Broadway should never be dark.
