Joan was never primarily thought of as an actor, Broadway based or otherwise. She made a name for herself as a comic. That is probably the reason for this seemingly odd discrepancy. Gandolfini and Williams were actors. While they might not have done a lot of theater they were always acting somewhere in film or television, and their rare returns to the stage brought huge audiences with them. (I know "Bengal Tiger At The Baghdad Zoo" was not a huge hit, but Williams brought people to it that would never have heard of it otherwise and gave it a run it would not have had.) Although I'm sure she would have liked to, Joan did not have a history of doing that.

I loved her, but I think this is understandable when seen with some perspective.

As for Christopher Even Welch, mikem makes a valid point. This man was a true theater artist, one of the best of the past twenty years. He deserved to be honored posthumously by the theater community. He wasn't especially famous, and I doubt anyone even thought of it. Sad.
