I had the pleasure of working for a gentleman who had been editor in chief of People back in the late 70s/early 80s. Johnny Mathis came out in a cover story. He wasn't outed. Dick, the editor, gave him several chances to delete the paragraph, but Mathis insisted he wanted to do it. Dick chose to bury the paragraph in the middle of the story rather than sensationalize it.
