Just called the Broadway League from Durham, NC

Posted by: Sullivan 12:42 pm EDT 09/09/14

About my displeasure and thousands of others on this site and everywhere.

Someone said she was not sure what was going to happen. I told her someone should go into the theatre chat rooms (all that chat) specifically and find out for herself.

It's actually both things. There is respect accorded people who have amassed enough support from the public AND from producers and designers and big Broadway stars such as Jackman and MacDonald to reverse a decision.
You don't know why Phil Smith changed his vote( if he did) any more than I do. Perhaps he figured it was time to get the matter settled or perhaps he got enough calls from colleagues, friend or even his wife saying he should do it.

By late Tuesday morning, several Broadway theater owners had acted unilaterally to make plans to dim their marquees for Ms. Rivers

I love that Patrick Healy used the word "unilaterally".

Another diminution in the meaning of things in this world. I am guessing the next step will be what someone suggested below-a monthly dimming that erases all meaning from the gesture. Pathetic humans we are.

To see the theater community come together to honor such a talent and supporter of theater warms my heart.
Joan Rivers was one of a kind and we won't see anyone like her again in our life time.

You thought they were right...

That's fine...but the public has been heard. It was expressed in a very respectful manner and patrons and theater folk alike rallied. The likes of Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Jackie Hoffman, Hugh Jackman and others stood by this.

I feel a little better knowing that someone who lived and breathed theater will get her recognition from that community. No one is forcing you to take part in this.

I'll be there, needless to say.

I never, ever said that. In fact, I said that if it were my decision, I would dim the lights. That is not what this is about AT ALL. This is about forcing someone to backtrack on their own decision because people are too fucking lazy to make their own gesture. That is ALL I have objected to-the hijacking of someone else's gesture, and replacing it with the meaningless forced gesture we will have tonight.

What is your next cause? Why don't you have a campaign the day after next year's Tony ceremony to grant statues to the shows you think should have won instead of the ones that did win. It's no different than what's being done here. Rendering something meaningful into something meaningless.

You're right. The bravery that people have displayed in standing up to an aggressor like Charlotte St. Martin and the disrespect she showed to each and every one of us sitting in our kitchens huddled over our laptops is inspiring! I am starting an online campaign for the American Theatre Wing to bestow a Special Tony to those of us who passionately, valiantly fought the good fight and gave of ourselves at ATC. And if they don't give us the award we demand, watch out Theatre Wing: there will be hell to pay.

Like Glenn Close's Alex says in FATAL ATTRACTION: " I will NOT be ignored."

It will be MORE meaningful I think because we showed our support for Joan.

We didn't FORCE them. The last I checked we had freedom of speech-that was what I and countless others exercised.

do you seriously think that Phil Smith changed his mind because of this? You forced him to do something so he could go on with business. It may be more meaningful to you, but the gesture becomes meaningless as a result. As I said, you just don't get it. Some others do. Not much more we can accomplish here. Mazel Tov for your fabulous victory.

In this case, "you just don't get it" merely means "you just don't agree with me". Your assertion that the gesture is meaningless is nothing more than your personal opinion, not some incontrovertible fact. It is not based on anything else, no matter how much you bloviate. You feel one way, MANY others feel differently, and that's all she wrote.

When the League is forced to reverse itself and do something it decided NOT to do, what is the meaning of the gesture? Surely not that the League thinks she deserves the honor.

i totally understand your point - or at least the way you see it - but i completely disagree that having acknowledged that the outcry was so great they reversed the decision somehow makes it meaningless. i suspect it means even more. though, i suspect it had far more to do with heavy hitters and big time supporters railing than with most of the people here (and elsewhere) patting themselves on the back. i understand why you disagree. but unless you have proof - or even state you heard for a fact - that the folks who made this decision consider it meaningless you're only transferring.

do you have this data?

if not, the folks arguing it means something is every bit as valid as your insistence it means nothing.

regardless, the gesture as public recognition of by the league is happening. everyone is free to spin it as they like.

i hope this leads to less, not more, or at least more stringently-determined decisions to dim the lights. there have been some that were questionable and omissions i find unforgivable. i hate that it is so tied to celebrity. now thats it is seen as an insult not to dim the lights i'm hoping as a corrective the number will decrease and we can return to the time when, i agree, it meant more.

So when the Drama Desk Awards reinstated the Best Orchestrations category after discontinuing--as a result of, mostly, protest and outcry--it was a meaningless gesture?

I have no way of know the answer to that, nor do I think it is comparable. But if they gave the award to one orchestrator and then, after a hue and cry from the public, took it back and gave it to someone else, yes I would think that would diminish the award and render it a meaningless gesture.

I truly am not proud of having hastily posted my sloppy title above. Not a proud moment, not at all.

As far as the drama around dimming the lights in honor of Joan Rivers' passing, I'm honestly more interested in the push-back of the community against the League's decision, on behalf of a celebrity many have strong feelings about. I would say that it's surprising that among all of the signifiers in the world around us, these developments are so powerfully driving your assessment of us humans as pathetic.

That is not what was suggested below.

But I also think it's sad that you think doing it once a MONTH would somehow diminish this. How awful that this should only be reserved for the loss of someone truly famous, as if their death is a bigger loss than someone who spent their life working on Broadway but wasn't really famous.
