Williams and Gandolfini seemed like attempts to be "in" by the League...

They were not by any stretch men of the theater, they were't known for it and they didn't commit themselves to it in any notable way except each in 1 major production relatively late in their careers. To dim the lights for them seemed to me like the League saying "we're cool too... he was one of the most popular and acclaimed actors, and he was on Broadway so that means he's one of us, which makes us cool too." It seemed like jumping on the bandwagon to honor them. I understand the distinction between them as actors and Rivers as a comedian... but if she wasn't an actress she shouldn't have been nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play. And also, if you watch her documentary you know that all she ever wanted was to be an actress... so it's a bit sad now to take an honor given to two men who had less commitment to Broadway theater than her and to deny it to her because she wasn't enough of an actor.
