The new series, Theater Close-Up, a unique collaboration between THIRTEEN and that large community of non-profit Off-Broadway theaters, will finally bring a diverse cross-section of those provocative plays to primetime and online audiences. The series - which will be hosted by acclaimed actress Sigourney Weaver -- premieres Thursday, October 2 at 9 p.m. on THIRTEEN with John Van Druten's "London Wall" from the Mint Theater Company, dedicated to bringing worthy but neglected plays back to the stage, and continues on successive Thursdays at 10 p.m. with repeat broadcasts on Sunday evenings following Masterpiece. (WLIW21 will air the series on Monday evenings beginning October 6 at 10:30 p.m.) THIRTEEN is using its unrivaled expertise in producing national PBS arts programming - starting with such classic series as Theater in America, part of the award-winning series GREAT PERFORMANCES and special limited series such as Stage on Screen -- to provide New Yorkers with unparalleled access to one of the City's greatest underexposed cultural assets. The plays run the emotional and thematic gamut: from Richard Nelson's cycle "The Apple Family Plays,"presented by The Public Theater; Hamish Linklater's"The Vandal," presented by The Flea Theater; Denis O'Hare and Lisa Peterson's "An Iliad," presented by New York Theatre Workshop; Brian Richard Mori's "Hellman v. McCarthy," presented by Abingdon Theatre Company; and an encore presentation of The Flea's "Looking at Christmas" by Steven Banks. Besides Sigourney Weaver's numerous regional and Broadway credits, including Beyond Therapy, Hurlyburly, Sex and Longing, and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, she has performed roles at The Public Theater (Marco Polo Sings a Solo, New Jerusalem), and The Flea Theater (The Guys, Mrs. Farnsworth, Love Letters). October 2, 2014 London Wall (Mint Theater Company) John Van Druten's play explores the tumultuous lives and love affairs of the women employed as shorthand typists in a busy solicitor's office in 1930's London. Pat Milligan, a naïve young typist, falls for the charms of a predatory junior lawyer. Watching with concern is the firm's senior secretary, her too-timid suitor and several others in the office. Presiding over all is Mr. Walker, gamely trying to navigate a new kind of office where men and women must work side by side. The 1931 play was acclaimed for its hyper-realistic depiction of office life as well as its soulful probing of the dreams and desires of its female characters. Best known today for such Broadway hits as I Remember Mama and I Am a Camera (which inspired the musical Cabaret), John Van Druten wrote deftly observed, character-driven plays. Directed by Davis McCallum. With Matthew Gumley, Stephen Plunkett, Alex Trow, Julia Coffey, Elise Kibler, Laurie Kennedy, Christopher Sears, Katie Gibson, and Jonathan Hogan. McCarthy (Abingdon Theatre Company) The greatest literary feud in modern American history began on January 25, 1980 when author Mary McCarthy appeared as a guest on "The Dick Cavett Show" and declared that "every word [playwright Lillian Hellman] writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the.'" Hellman went ballistic and sued McCarthy for libel, sparking a lawsuit that spanned more than four years. Brian Richard Mori's Hellman v. McCarthy, a roller coaster ride filled with comedy and pathos, features Emmy Award-winner Dick Cavett, as he recreates his role in the actual events. Directed by Jan Buttram. I am very glad that they're starting to again do more of the kind of the theatre programming that they used to do constantly. It's just so disheartening that Shapiro wasn't aware of this programming from the past till relatively recently, or at least that's what the article seems to be implying. If that's correct, how did he get to be in his position? Shouldn't he have known of WNET's history before he even got his job? It's taken him six years to learn about this? Some of this older stuff has been on DVD for years. But even though there's a lot on DVD, it is only a small portion of the huge amount of theatre on television that was a major part of WNET's programming in the '60s and '70s. Another thing he could do that would be welcome would be to bring some of this stuff out of the archives and show it again. It would be so great if WNET would start showing programs from the massive amount that hasn't been issued on DVD. | |

| You're reading an awful lot into a single word, "discovering", which was possibly a paraphrase on the part of the interviewer. I, too, was surprised (I just watched the DVD of UNCOMMON WOMEN a couple of weeks back), but it's unlikely that he really didn't know this material until recently. | |

| Most likely the work was "discovered" and the idea to create a new legacy was formed when 13 was celebrating its 50th anniversary last year. They did a series of retrospective docs that include their drama programs (see below). Knowing the work existed and seeing it are two different things. It's also worth noting that Neal Shapiro background is in news, not the arts... | |

| My understanding of how PBS works is that other stations will have the opportunity to license that content and broadcast it. I guess I could be wrong, but I've certainly seen a lot of WNET programming on San Francisco's KQED over the years. Great Performances, for example, is a WNET-produced program that is seen all over the country. | |

| Here in LA, we do get Great Performances, but I doubt KOCE will pick this up. Too busy running reruns of doo wop group reunions. But I'm happy about this, even though I have lousy wifi. I loved all those great plays from WNET in the seventies. Laura | |

| But isn't a lot of what's shown on PBS stations across the country produced by WNET? That's my impression. Am I wrong? I'm sure that not everything produced by WNET is shown across the country, but it kind of sounds like you're saying that the fact that it's produced by WNET automatically means that it won't be shown elsewhere. If that's true — that programming produced by WNET is shown only in New York — I've sure had the wrong impression all these years. | |

| The series, which is hosted by Sigourney Weaver, will also be repeated Sundays, streamed online and broadcast on sister station WLIW/Channel 21, but the rights deals do not allow for national broadcast. They won't be broadcast, but as stevemr noted above, they will be streamed, so everybody WILL have a chance to watch them...legally.:) | |

| Perhaps if the issues can be worked out, some of them will eventually be shown on other PBS stations. These plays are perfect for local production, so I suspect those who profit from subsequent productions (authors, publishers, and some of the presenting companies) don't want to inhibit regional theaters from taking them up. I would hope they can simply come up with a formula for national broadcast at a later date. | |
